Project Title: Using a Fire Extinguisher

Tools: 7Taps

Time in Development: 3 Hours

My Role: Instructional Designer

Collaborators: IDOL Academy Members

Summary:

A quick microlearning course on how to correctly use a fire extinguisher in an emergency situation.

Challenge:

I was challenged to design a microlearning course to quickly review how to use a fire extinguisher. Between discussions with others, we realized that we never had to use a fire extinguisher despite seeing them at our job sites.

Solution:

After this quick training, learners will have been taught the steps to use an extinguisher. They'll also have the acronym PASS to help them remember the steps to utilize a fire extinguisher in an emergency situation.

Result:

Learners were able to verbally explain how to use an extinguisher. They were also able to model the use of an extinguisher using the information taught in the training and explain what PASS means to help them remember the steps. Learners were more confident and comfortable using this important life-saving tool.

Project Title: Diabetic Hypoglycemia vs Hyperglycemia

Tools: Articulate Rise

Time in Development: 12hours

My Role: Instructional Designer/eLearning Developer

Collaborators: IDOL Academy Members

Summary: This course was designed to give an overview of two types of common diabetic complications known as hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. It breaks down the two different complications by explaining what they are, the common causes, signs and symptoms, and ways to treat both. The course is interactive for the learners, provides scenarios, and has an assessment at the end.

Challenge: About 35 million people suffer from diabetes and many people are unaware of how to help someone suffering from hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. This lack of knowledge could prevent a diabetic from getting the help they need in the workplace.

Solution: After this training, employees understand the difference between the two conditions and how to identify someone who might be suffering from either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. They will also learn different ways to treat a person who is experiencing one of these conditions.

Result: Employees who took this training felt more confident in how to identify and treat someone with hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia since diabetes is such a common health problem.
